I try to convey my research in many ways, and I do believe a picture is worth a thousand words. Find below a small sample of animations produced during the course of my work.
Data-driven wave propagation
This GIF represents a 1D pulse propagating over a string. The first panel depicts the FEM solution, while the other two correspond to DDCM solutions (which replace the material constitutive law by a finite discrete dataset) with different data volumes: insufficient data yields but noise, with enough data the DDCM solution is indistinguishable from the FEM one. Seismic pressures on retaining walls
How does the ground shake affect the pressure increments experienced by reatining walls of underground structure? The quick answer is: it depends! For quite a while, we have known that it depends strongly on the frequency of the ground movement, but apparently the soil compresibility is also key: see below what happens to the pressure distribution for almost-incompressible soils (e.g., clays). All details in our paper.
